Blog assignment #2

I have learned many different concepts throughout these chapters. In the prologue, it made me aware of how many different people it takes to have psychology continually develop from the 1920s through today. Since then, many philosophers and physiologists were involved in making psychology what it is today by putting together all their individual theories. We learned about the various types of experiments and observations that took place. Some of those same studies that were used in the past are also based on how psychologists work today. If all those people didn't help contribute to the studies of psychology, then we might not be as advanced with our knowledge.
I also learned about the different ways in which psychologists observe and describe behavior. Some of the ways include case studies, surveys, and naturalistic observation. Cases studies examine one person in depth hoping to discover world-wide principals. Surveys look at the self-reported attitudes and behaviors less in depth than case studies. Naturalistic observation is simply where people or animals are being observed and their behaviors are recorded without any interruption or control by the observer. Professional psychologists use these techniques to draw conclusions about why people or animals behave the way they do. In everyday life, us non-psychologists also observe and come to conclusions, but we aren't as analytical.
More information I learned about was how behavior in cultures affects our behavior when we are involved with a different culture. When we are involved with a different culture, we become more aware of the way they do things. A lot of the time we may feel uncomfortable and may struggle understanding why different cultures than our own behave or think they way they do. For example, when we go out to eat at a Chinese restaurant, we should know a little background of their culture so we don't feel so out of place. They use chopsticks, have a different language, and might have certain traditions they use while eating that we aren't familiar with. Becoming more open to cultures and accepting our differences enables us to have a stronger respect for each other around the world.
I found the study of how males and females tend to be alike and different quite surprising. One example was how men are more likely to be aggressive in situations, but when it comes to dating relationships, violent acts tend to be mutual between both the male and female. I found this interesting because when we think of arrests we typically think of men having the higher crime rate, which is true. Therefore, we don't realize women can also have a reputation to become aggressive. Males and females are different in many subjects/situations but can also have some similarities within that situation such as this example.
3 Questions:
1) Why are identical twins often said to be able to read each others minds?
2) Why are western cultures and eastern cultures so opposite from each other?
3) If we are shaped from birth by our parents' traits, why can siblings be complete opposites sometimes?

                                                            Its All about Psychology

Science, science, psychological science
using tendencies such as hindsight bias
we think we know, we think we might
dig so deep, we find insight
on our thoughts and our actions
when we discover, we just ask more questions
hypotheses and theories are not the same
instead they lead us back to more mind games
